North Summit Fire seeks additional staffing, ambulances and equipment in tentative 2025 budget

North Summit Fire Service District presented a tentative budget and strategic priorities to the Summit County Council on Nov. 6, emphasizing staffing, emergency-medical services and equipment modernization.
Chief (presenter) summarized 2024 accomplishments: fully staffed ambulances providing advanced life-support services, $273,000 in grant funding, and an ISO rating improvement from 6 to 5. Looking to 2025, the district asked to staff the Hannaford Fire Station (Station 22) with a full engine, brush truck, water tender and ambulance; add personnel to better meet NFPA response-time benchmarks (dispatch-to-en-route and dispatch-to-on-scene targets); and expand recruitment and retention efforts amid regional competition for paramedics.
The chief said the county has agreed to provide ambulances to three fire districts over three years as part of an EMS support package; North Summit received its ambulance order (slightly delayed into early next year). The district will invest in exhaust-extraction systems in stations, equipment upgrades and modest capital purchases. The presentation noted payroll is the largest expense (~78% of the budget) and that a modest legal-services line was added for 2025.
Council members commended the department's progress and approved the district’s tentative 2025 budget and 2024 amendment.
