Middleburg — The Middleburg Sustainability Committee presented its annual report and asked council to consider a broader advisory role; event organizers updated council on parade logistics and sponsorship for Christmas in Middleburg.
Lynn Kaye, chair of the Sustainability Committee, described the group’s shift from episodic cleanups and collections (batteries, paint, shredding) toward work on larger resilience issues such as water and flood planning. Kaye said the committee has recruited members with professional sustainability expertise and requested council input on how the committee might be more closely integrated as an advisory resource to town decision-makers.
Councilmembers praised prior volunteer-driven efforts—cigarette-butt campaigns and community cleanups—and discussed potential committee roles on electric vehicle charging, flood preparedness and public education. Kaye and vice chair Christina Tonda offered to return for a follow-up meeting to align committee priorities with council needs.
In a separate presentation, parade organizers Doug and Michelle Myers reported 2023 accomplishments (a 500-piece collectible ornament sale), parking plans centered at Mickey Gordon Park plus donated spaces, private viewing tables and bleachers at Madison, an MOU between the town and the Middleburg Business and Professional Association nearing finalization, food-truck delegation under a new coordinator, and added accessible/handicapped viewing areas at Washington and South Pendleton.
Chief (unidentified) confirmed coordination with local law-enforcement partners and reported preparations were going well for parade safety. Organizers said PenFed is a presenting sponsor and they are discussing cobranded merchandise (hand warmers or scarves) and possible parade elements such as a photo snow-globe feature.
Next steps: Sustainability Committee will schedule follow-up input meetings with council; parade organizers will finalize the MOU and continue volunteer recruitment and safety coordination with the police department.
