New Kent County School Board reorganizes leadership, reappoints clerks and adopts code of conduct

The New Kent County School Board completed its annual reorganization and governance housekeeping during its January meeting, electing leadership, reappointing clerks and adopting a code of conduct.

The board certified a recent closed session under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act and Code of Virginia section 2.2-3711 and approved the certification by motion. In the reorganization votes that followed, the board recorded the election of its chair; after the roll call a member said, "You are our chair." The vote on the chair was recorded as passing 5-0.

Board members also filled the vice-chair role after nominations that included Ron Ball and Heather Dabrowski. A motion recognizing the vice-chair nomination carried on the board poll. The board reappointed Johanna Davis as clerk and Dr. Brian Nichols as deputy clerk; that motion passed 5-0.

The board adopted a code of conduct for members and the clerk as presented; the motion carried on a 5-0 roll call. During the consent agenda the board tabled the minutes for separate consideration and approved the remaining consent items, including monthly bills, payroll and superintendent recommendations on personnel and student matters.

On committee assignments, board members reviewed appointments to internal and external committees (including PTOs, the New Kent Educational Foundation and the Chesapeake Bay Governors School). Because several members flagged scheduling conflicts, a motion to delay final approval of those appointments until the work session passed 5-0. The board later approved a calendar amendment moving an August meeting date by motion that was recorded as unanimous.

The meeting concluded with routine superintendent and board remarks and a reminder that the next meeting will be held on 02/03/2025 in the New Kent Historic Courthouse Boardroom.
