Planning Board continues comprehensive-plan review, flags transportation and capital-improvement language

The Fort Myers Planning Board continued its review of the city's comprehensive-plan update on March 5, with consultant Luis Serna (Calvin Giordano & Associates) and staff summarizing goals, objectives and data for elements including recreation/open space, capital improvements, concurrency management, public safety and intergovernmental coordination.
Serna and staff presented draft language and data highlights, and the board discussed tightening recurring use of the word “adequate” in goals and objectives, aligning park standards with National Recreation and Parks Association metrics, and strengthening capital-improvement language to reflect operational and maintenance costs as well as 5-year capital programming. Members emphasized executing transportation commitments and exploring options to better account for bicycle and pedestrian level-of-service standards.
Assistant Director Tony Palermo invited the board and public to upcoming stakeholder workshops; staff noted the third community meeting for the comprehensive-plan update is scheduled at Riverside Community Center on March 24 at 4 p.m.
The consultant said staff will summarize board comments and incorporate them in the next draft for continued public engagement.
Next steps: Additional public workshops are planned; staff and consultants will revise draft elements per board comments and continue public outreach.
