DeKalb board tables three governance policies until incoming members review

The DeKalb County Board of Education voted unanimously Dec. 9 to table three policy amendments that had been listed as "ready for action," saying the incoming board should have an opportunity to review them.

The policies on hold are BBFA (local school councils / principal advisory councils), BC (board meetings) and BBI (board/staff relations). The motion to suspend those items until new members take their seats was made from the dais and carried 7–0 after several board members argued that policy changes affecting governance ought to be considered by the board that will serve under them.

Supporters of the suspension said the change protects the next board’s prerogative to set meeting practices and committee membership; opponents had urged the body to trust the policy committee’s months of work. "I will not support another...that you impose all of these, sort of like sanctions on me," said Dr. Joyce Morley as she warned against outgoing members enacting lasting changes for the next board.

The board office will place the three policies on the incoming board’s agenda in January for review and possible action.
