Sudbury DEI Commission to send letter urging schools to recognize Eid as a holiday

The Sudbury Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission voted to send a letter to the Sudbury Public Schools and Lincoln-Sudbury regional school district urging recognition of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as school holidays.

The drafted letter explains that Eid observances often occupy the whole day and that recognizing the holidays on the school calendar would prevent Muslim students and staff from having to choose between worship and school activities. The draft cites neighboring towns that have already taken steps to observe Eid and asks district leaders to consider the change.

Commissioners discussed technical details before voting. Some members asked whether towns listed in the draft had created a full district-wide day off (a "category 1" holiday) or a policy that allows affected students to be excused (a "category 2" holiday). Safa noted the lunar calendar variability — dates shift from year to year and can fall on weekends — and commissioners flagged practical considerations for teachers who might otherwise need to use paid time off.

A motion to adopt the Janine-drafted letter and send it on behalf of the DEI Commission to the school committees and superintendents was made, seconded and approved by the commissioners present. The commission also agreed to follow up with town staff and the school liaisons about calendar timing; members acknowledged that any change to the official school calendar may not take effect until a future school-year calendar (the commission discussed a likely 2026 implementation window for calendar changes).
