Sudbury commissions begin stewarding CLG mission to include natural, agricultural and archaeological resources

Members of Sudbury's Historic District Commission and Historical Commission met jointly on Oct. 28 to review a one-page stewardship working-group mission statement developed per recommendations in the town's preservation plan and master plan. Presenters said the draft is intended to define the commissions' role as the town's Certified Local Government (CLG) and to guide leadership, advocacy and education on historic resources.
Taryn Trexler and other drafters explained the statement draws language from the Sudbury master plan and the consultant-produced preservation plan and asked commissioners to review the wording. Several members proposed explicitly adding "natural landscapes" and "agricultural landscapes" to ensure the mission covers both glacial/natural features and historic agricultural landforms. Commissioners also recommended explicitly including "archaeological resources," noting both legal and interpretive reasons to call those resources out separately.
The commissions agreed to revise the draft to include those clarifications and to convene a stewardship working-group meeting in the spring so commissioners can decide what additional town entities should join (suggestions included the Community Preservation Commission, Sudbury Historical Society, Wayside Inn Foundation and Conservation Commission). The edited one-page mission will return for additional review before outreach to a broader stakeholder group.
