Marsha told the task force that the Select Board approved the Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail’s proposed sculpture on Dec. 2 by a reported 4–1 vote. She said board members raised questions about the sculptor, safety and where the piece would be installed, and suggested the task force conduct a site visit before making a final recommendation.
"There were a lot of questions asked about who's the designer. There were some concerns about safety and where it would be installed," Marsha said, summarizing the Select Board discussion. She added that Len Simon spoke with the sculptor and that they will ensure there are no sharp edges and that a plaque or signage will clarify the piece as public art rather than a climbing or play structure.
Marsha identified three potential installation sites: just north of the Diamond intersection, Morris Road, or adjacent to the Parkinson access walkway. She recommended the task force consider a winter or early‑spring site visit and provide a location recommendation to the Select Board when ready.
The task force did not vote on a site during the meeting; Marsha said the Select Board’s approval relates to the sculpture and that the task force’s role is to recommend the precise location and any site controls needed for safety.
