Darren Hornbeck was confirmed as chair of the Professional Standards and Teacher Education Board after a nomination and a show-of-hands vote at the board's October meeting. Hornbeck accepted the nomination and thanked members for their support.
Two candidates were nominated for vice chair: Sandra Scodales and Dr. Ebony Turrell Shockley. After both candidates addressed the board briefly — Scodales outlining seven years on the board and decades of classroom experience, and Dr. Shockley describing her work in PK–12 and higher education at the University of Maryland, College Park — staff distributed an electronic ballot. Several members experienced account-permission issues and staff adjusted settings before collecting votes. After a re-vote to resolve a tie, the chair announced that Dr. Ebony Turrell Shockley received the majority and will serve as vice chair.
The election proceeded without a recorded roll-call tally; the chair and staff handled the process under the board’s established procedures. The board moved next to the scheduled presentations for the day.
