Yucca Valley council approves military banner recognition program to honor service members

The Town Council approved a draft policy and framework for a military banner recognition program at its Dec. 17 meeting. Staff presented the policy developed at the PRCC’s request, describing eligibility (active duty, honorably discharged veterans, and families of fallen service members), proposed banner size (30 by 60 inches), display duration (one year), and a first-phase installation at the Yucca Valley Community Center using five light poles that can hold up to 10 banners.
Jessica from staff explained that the town expects a fabrication cost of about $150 per banner and plans to seek corporate sponsorships so families would not necessarily bear that cost. She also said the program could expand over time to other locations such as Brynn Park, Yucca Trail or Onaga Trail if community participation supports it.
Council discussion emphasized prioritizing active-duty service members for initial placement given limited pole capacity; staff and council agreed on a first-come, first-served system with PRCC review and possible council delegation of approvals. The council voted unanimously to approve the program, with staff to finalize details in collaboration with the 29 Palms military base and to pilot the program with the community-center poles with possible Memorial Day 2025 installation.
A council member asked staff to ensure cost-recovery mechanisms and clarified that families would keep their banner after the display year. Staff said any detailed installation costs and timeline would be addressed as staff develops the final program materials.
