Council reviews $75,000 opioid settlement allocation to First Steps Wellness and Recovery Center

Jan presented Resolution 2024-R-123 at the Dec. 9 work session proposing the expenditure of $75,000 in funding received through the West Virginia opioid settlement distribution. The funds were described as to be expended to the (transcript: "Cowell County Coalition for the Homeless") and restricted for use by First Steps Wellness and Recovery Center.
Jan outlined services provided by First Steps to people with substance use disorder and severe mental illness, including peer recovery coaches, naloxone training, HIV testing, AA and SMART Recovery groups, a computer lab for resume work and job applications, and other support designed to help participants reconnect with family and reenter the workforce. Jan stated the allocation meets the criteria set forth by the West Virginia First memorandum of understanding.
