The Maryland State Department of Education asked the Education Policy Committee on Sept. 10 to recommend the State Board adopt two rebranded Praxis subject assessments for family and consumer sciences and for technology education and engineering. Kelly Meadows, MSDE staff, said ETS rebranded the tests to align with current national standards and that the department recommends adopting the multi‑state score‑setting panel’s recommended passing scores. "They will be pulled off the Praxis line beginning 08/01/2025," Meadows said, and MSDE suggested allowing about a year for educator‑preparation programs to align to any content changes.
Committee members asked no substantive questions during the presentation and moved quickly to a motion to recommend adoption. Mr. Paul moved and Dr. Johnson seconded the motion; committee members present raised their hands and voted to forward the recommendation to the full State Board.
Because the committee voted only to recommend adoption to the full board, the proposed change must be acted on by the Maryland State Board of Education before it becomes MSDE policy. MSDE staff said they will share implementation guidance so educator‑preparation programs have time to adjust.
What’s next: the recommendation will be considered at the broader State Board meeting. If adopted, the rebranded exams would replace the prior subject assessments and the department intends to publish guidance for educator programs and certification offices.
