Loomis library sees steady use; Master Gardeners report 2,000 contacts and volunteer support

The Loomis Library reported nearly 43,000 circulations in FY 2023–24 and growth in active cardholders; UC Master Gardeners told council their new living classroom recorded about 2,000 contacts over six months and contributed over 1,700 volunteer hours.
At its latest meeting the Loomis Town Council received combined reports from the Loomis Library and the UC Master Gardeners on library operations, programs and the library garden.
Library Director Sarah presented FY 2023–24 metrics: the collection exceeds 16,000 items, staff added 2,623 items during the year, and the library circulated 42,925 items. As of June 30 the library reported 3,021 active cardholders and more than 600 volunteer hours recorded; staff noted volunteer hours are likely undercounted because sign-in is imperfect. Sarah described digital resources (Hoopla and Libby), ZipBooks delivery, circulating items beyond books (Chromebooks, hotspots, seeds) and partnerships that extend services into the community.
UC Master Gardeners Sandy Fitzpatrick and Karen Lopez described the garden behind the library as a "living classroom," highlighting native-plantings (about 85% of the garden) and education programming. They reported roughly 2,000 contacts from March through August, more than 1,700 volunteer hours contributed by 84 master gardeners, and multiple special events and tours. "We used it for construction costs," presenters said of fundraising efforts such as a Buy-a-Brick campaign used to fund construction and program support.
Council and the public praised the partnerships and volunteer contributions. Upcoming events noted by staff include the Fruit Shed Fest on Oct. 5 and library strategic planning sessions open to the public.
