IT director warns of rising costs after early hardware delivery; seeks additional funds

“I pulled a hundred and 74,000 out to pay for those invoices that were due in December of 2023,” the IT director said, explaining he used departmental funds to cover the early invoices. He said the county expects to collect roughly $90,000 from interlocal invoices for network services and bandwidth usage from municipalities this year but still anticipates needing additional appropriations—on the order of $100,000—to cover labor and software increases.
The director said pricing pressure increased after VMware was acquired by another company and that Microsoft licensing costs have risen significantly. He recommended exploring alternative vendors and pointed to the security complexity of the county’s shared IT environment, noting some municipalities are integrated into the same systems and pay licensing rather than maintain separate servers.
Commissioners discussed user fees, licensing, and possible interlocal funding vehicles; the IT director said some counties operate with pooled funding arrangements and suggested bringing state IOT staff to advise. Commissioners approved the presented additional appropriation items and asked staff to provide further budget detail in upcoming workshops.
