San Gabriel certifies Nov. 5 election results, swears in Tony Ding and Jorge Herrera Avila and honors outgoing John Harrington

San Gabriel’s City Council on Tuesday adopted a resolution reciting the facts of the Nov. 5, 2024 general municipal election and presented certificates of election before administering oaths of office to two council members.
Staff reported the Nov. 5 election yielded a voter turnout of 64.66%; of those votes, 27% were cast in person and 73% by mail. The council’s staff recommendation to adopt a resolution reciting the election results was moved, seconded and approved by a 5–0 vote.
Senator Sasha Renee Perez administered the oath of office for Councilmember Tony Ding and LA County Assessor Jeffrey Prang administered the oath for newly seated Councilmember Jorge Herrera Avila. Both councilmembers received certificates of election and brief congratulatory remarks from local and regional officials, including representatives from Congresswoman Judy Chu’s office, Assemblymember Mike Fong, and neighboring city councils.
The meeting also featured a multi‑speaker recognition for outgoing councilmember John Harrington. Multiple elected officials and representatives read certificates and offered remarks honoring Harrington’s years of service; Harrington responded with a speech reflecting on his time on the council and his gratitude for staff and residents.
The council’s reorganization schedule was also discussed: staff recommended keeping Mayor John Woo and Vice Mayor Menchaca in their roles until April 1, 2025 to allow a formal reorganization then; the council approved that schedule 5–0.
