Eureka’s economic development division told the council that the city is hosting the final year of the Street Art Festival starting July 29, with 15 murals and 13 ceramic pieces planned. Staff emphasized that the festival is funded by property owners and sponsorships rather than city general funds and said organizers have raised more than $50,000 for this year’s program.
"I just wanna mention that there are no city dollars going towards this festival. This was all fundraised," the presenter said, and staff listed participating artists and sites including an aquatic center mural, Opera Alley and work coordinated with local schools and businesses.
Staff also described three Clean California projects supported through Caltrans funding: updating 32 utility boxes along the US‑101 corridor (artists receive $1,000 stipends), lighting previously painted Samoa Bridge pillars with colored LED lights, and completing Herrick Overpass welcome signage. Clean California coordinator Julia Peterson reported that these beautification projects had reduced tagging in other locations and noted a falloff in capacity when the program sunsets.
The council received the presentation and staff indicated the Herrick welcome signage designs will be subject to a public poll and scheduled council review. The projects are scheduled to be installed and painted through August where applicable.
