Staff updates: public safety building funding, repaving schedule, canal undergrounding and local housing projects

During the meeting, Speaker 2 delivered a series of staff updates on ongoing and upcoming municipal projects and events.

On facilities and funding, Speaker 2 said the public safety building remains in architectural design and that roughly half of the project funding has been secured; staff are pursuing additional funding leads. "We bought basically got about half funded, and we're hopeful that a couple of leads are gonna pan out," Speaker 2 said.

Maintenance work on city streets was described as a crack-seal and slurry-seal program intended to extend pavement life. Speaker 2 said crews are expected to begin work in January and continue through April. "If you keep sealing the cracks in your streets, they will last infinitely longer," he said.

Infrastructure and development updates included immediate work to underground a canal on Ninth Street between Olive and Mellon, with undergrounding targeted in December and curb/gutter/sidewalk and repaving after completion. A wetlands grand opening/ribbon-cutting was announced for 10 a.m. the day after tomorrow, and an energy farm ribbon-cutting was noted for the following day.

Two senior apartment projects were described as moving forward: one doing site grading and ponding-basin work, and Pine Crossing Apartments in plan-check stage preparing for later permit actions. On a separate lot-split project, staff reported limited recent movement from the developer (referred to as Doug's) and indicated staff will check in periodically.

Personnel and calendar notes: Speaker 2 said Vanessa Ramirez appears likely to join the city council and that the new council is expected to be seated on Dec. 9. Staff also previewed an appointments schedule for January when commissions and boards are typically reaffirmed.

The meeting then moved on to other administrative items and adjournment.
