Meade County facilities director reports repeated siren failures, jail equipment fixes and windows damaged in apparent shooting

Ben Petraco, Meade County facilities director, briefed the commission on June maintenance work and several facilities issues, including repeated siren failures, replacement of stair nosing at the courthouse, recurring jail kitchen heater element failures, and a failed outdoor walk-in freezer that was repaired using a spare part.
Petraco said crews had completed about 59 work requests in June and handled a range of outdoor projects. He noted the Faith-area emergency siren apparently sustained a lightning strike that fried control boards and batteries; the software polling system sometimes fails to indicate an outage and the department relies on reports from residents for detection.
On the law enforcement office windows that were shot out, Petraco said temporary patches covered the outer pane while Century Glass ordered replacement panes, with an estimated two-to-three-week lead time. An insurance claim has been filed and claims adjuster Sean Robertson is expected to inspect the damage; the chief of police, Jody Van Water, will coordinate access for inspection.
Commissioners and staff discussed whether tinting or a different glazing type would be appropriate; Petraco said the current laminated pane cannot accept interior film without risking damage and suggested either interior shades or replacing all panes with a different glazing product if the commission wanted to pursue that option.
No formal action was recorded; commissioners asked staff to coordinate the insurance inspection and to return with cost and options if the board wants to pursue upgraded glazing.
