Meade County OKs emergency resolution naming designees for wildland-fire response

Meade County commissioners on July 9 adopted a resolution to formalize who may order rangeland and wildland firefighting resources on the county’s behalf and to require prior authorization by at least two commissioners for expenditures above a set threshold.

Sean Henderson, the county emergency manager and veterans service officer, presented the draft resolution and said it designates the commission chair, the sheriff or chief deputy, the county emergency manager and the chair of the Mead County Firefighters Association as points of contact. "This resolution specifies individuals that can order certain assets for fighting wildland fires," Henderson said, explaining the change would streamline requests for costly resources such as seaplanes.

Commissioners debated wording that had created ambiguity about who could act without prior approval. Board members directed staff to clarify that all named points of contact must obtain approval from no fewer than two commissioners before incurring expenditures that would exceed the county’s fiscal limit. Commissioner Talbot (speaker referenced in the record as Talbot) led the technical edits.

The board also added an emergency clause so the resolution could take immediate effect rather than waiting the typical 21-day period. After a second and brief discussion, the commissioners voted to pass the revised resolution; the chair declared the motion carried.

The action designates local authority for operational coordination with the Wildland Fire Division and is intended to speed administrative steps while preserving fiscal oversight by the elected board.
