Council authorizes city deposit to lock July 4 fireworks vendor amid debate over illegal private fireworks

After extended public comment and council discussion about debris, enforcement capacity and competing illegal private fireworks, the Soledad City Council on Sept. 18 authorized staff to use budgeted funds to place a deposit to secure a fireworks vendor for the July 4, 2025 show.

Staff presented a vendor estimate of roughly $15,275 for the show and recommended a 50 percent deposit to hold the date; the fourth‑of‑July committee submitted a written request asking the City to cosponsor the fireworks and provide in‑kind services and fundraising assistance. Staff said the City had approximately $12,500 budgeted to contribute and that the committee would be expected to fundraise the remainder and reimburse the City as it had done previously.

Council debate focused on two themes: cost and community benefit, and the practical limits of enforcement against private, illegal fireworks. Several council members said they were sympathetic to the family event and the committee’s work but questioned whether public dollars should be used for a short pyrotechnic display that often competes with private fireworks in the sky; others argued that withdrawing city support would not stop illegal fireworks and could reduce the safe, organized family event.

The council carried a motion to put the deposit (approximate city share $7,500) down with the condition that staff return with outreach and budgetary information and that the council continue to pursue community input about future fireworks funding policy. The motion passed by voice vote.
