Susan Peterson said the grant fund items total $40,460, including VDOE stipends for teacher trainers, STEM competition microgrants ($5,000 each) and a $10,000 microgrant for family education; she also described a Claude Moore opportunity award to buy clinical training phantoms and related equipment. Additionally, about $13,407 was identified for Glenvar High School camera surveillance equipment; that security grant requires a 25% local match that district staff said could be covered in the general fund.
Staff requested these grant appropriations be placed on the consent agenda for formal approval at the next regular meeting.
On operations, Superintendent Dr. Nicely briefed the board on winter weather impacts across the county. He described hazardous localized road conditions—notably in the Back Creek / Canterbury Park area—and said transportation staff had compiled street lists for affected routes. Dr. Nicely recommended targeted closures for specific schools or a two‑hour delay in areas with icy roads; board members did not object to staff making operational closure decisions and communicating with families.
No immediate appropriation votes were taken; staff will place the grant items on the consent agenda and continue to monitor roads and bus routes.
