Evarista Benuellos took the oath of office Wednesday evening and was welcomed onto the Soledad City Council, Mayor Anna Velasquez announced as the council paused for photographs and brief remarks.
Benuellos, after repeating the oath, thanked her family and community: "I want to thank God for just allowing me to have this door open for serving the community," she said. The ceremony drew members of the public and council members who praised Benuellos's community service.
Following the swearing-in, the council read three proclamations. The body proclaimed June 3 as World Bicycle Day, citing the health and environmental benefits of cycling and local programs such as Safe Routes to School. It also proclaimed June 9 as Día de los Niños to emphasize the city’s commitment to children's well-being and June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month; Sam Gomez, deputy director at the EVA Center, thanked the council for its support and called the resolution "a sign of solidarity and inclusion."
The proclamations were presented during the council presentation portion of the agenda and were adopted by voice vote. After the presentations, the council recessed briefly for a photo opportunity and reconvened to continue with the rest of the agenda.
The council meeting continued with presentations, consent items and policy discussions later in the evening.
