The council voted to place the city's 250th-anniversary "LOVE" sculpture between City Hall and the Cherry Hill Farmhouse formal garden but did not reach consensus on the final artwork. Staff presented four employee-submitted concepts; the Arts & Humanities Council and the Planning Commission recommended a design titled "Reflection in Diversity and Inclusivity," which would feature a reflective finish on most letters and a human-face collage in the "O". Several councilmembers raised concerns about the faces, materials, costs (estimated ~$10,000), and whether the installation best serves placemaking or other priorities.
Councilmember motioned and the council approved the recommended City Hall garden location (vote 5-2). On design, the council voted unanimously to table final approval and asked staff and the Arts & Humanities Council to refine designs (including possible combinations of the reflective treatment and a word-cloud concept) and return with polished options for final approval.
Next steps: staff will engage the Arts & Humanities Council and the original employee-artists to refine the concept, examine materials and ADA/installation requirements, and return to the council with updated renderings and cost estimates.
