Falls Church Planning Commission adopts resolution honoring departing planning director Paul Stoddard

The Falls Church City Planning Commission on Nov. 20 adopted a resolution thanking Planning Director Paul Stoddard for 12 years with the city and presenting him a formal resolution of appreciation.

City Manager Wyatt Shields opened the recognition, saying Stoddard has “meant so much to the progress of the city” and praising his work on small-area plans, zoning amendments and community engagement. Shields also announced that Gary Fuller will serve as interim planning director while the city transitions staff.

Commissioners took turns offering personal remarks about Stoddard’s tenure, noting his knack for managing difficult public meetings and including neighborhood input. One commissioner recalled the contentious bike/ped master-plan meeting 12 years ago and said Stoddard’s skill was “the ability…to take a room that has some strong differences of opinion and manage the meeting in a way that makes everyone feel that they’ve been heard.”

After brief comments, the commission moved the resolution onto the agenda, read its text into the record and took a roll-call vote. The motion passed on a unanimous recorded vote. The commission then paused for a group photograph and short informal remarks for Stoddard before resuming business.

The commission did not take any other formal personnel action at the meeting; staff said Fuller will serve in the interim and that further staffing updates will follow through normal city processes. The resolution will be entered into the meeting record.
