On Sept. 10 the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors directed staff to send a request to the Fredericksburg Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (FAMPO) asking the policy committee to study a potential New Post river crossing linking Route 17 (New Post) and Stafford/Route 3.
Supervisor Hayes explained the request as a preliminary "pulse" of the board to determine whether FAMPO’s policy committee would be willing to pursue a study. Board members raised questions about funding for a study and whether Stafford County would participate as a partner, and they discussed wording the request so it communicates that the board supports a study but is not imposing an immediate project.
"If this is just a motion that would kind of take the pulse of our board, and let FAMPO know that we're in favor of such a study, then I would definitely be in favor of it," one supervisor said during the discussion. The board approved the motion by a 7‑0 vote.
Next steps: staff will forward the board’s request to FAMPO for consideration by the policy committee; further action would depend on FAMPO interest, funding availability and any required partner participation.
