Madison Morgan, representing the Tri-County City Soil & Water Conservation District, briefed the Spotsylvania Board on the district’s FY24 activities affecting Spotsylvania County. The district reported $441,624 in cost-share funds invested in county producers for best-management practices, with 14,494 acres in Spotsylvania receiving program assistance and more than 10,000 acres of cover crops planted across the district.
Morgan described two main programs: the Virginia Agricultural Cost Share Program (ag producers) and the Virginia Conservation Assistance Program (VCAP) for non-ag landowners. The district also reported more than 6,000 linear feet of stream-bank protection and nearly $958,346 in cost-share paid to producers across the district. Education and outreach drove participation; the district reported hundreds of training hours, increased staff from three to five, and scholarships awarded to local students.
Supervisors thanked the district for outreach efforts and noted the practical benefits of cover-crop and fencing practices in protecting waterways and reducing runoff.
