VDOT and county staff outline dozens of projects and timelines, from roundabouts to trail and resurfacing work

VDOT and Spotsylvania County transportation staff briefed the Board on Nov. 12 about current and planned projects across the county, including construction status, funding gaps and anticipated schedules.
Key county projects discussed include the Old Plank/Chancellor roundabout (utility relocation underway; construction scheduled for completion in summer 2025), the Old Plank/Endura roundabout (preliminary engineering, cost estimate rose from $3.25M to about $6M), Waverly Village drainage improvements (preliminary engineering initiated), Chancellor Park Drive sidewalk project (TAP funding and proffer support; design ~60% complete, scheduled completion 2027) and the Smith Station multiuse path (TAP funding, preliminary engineering starting; completion currently projected for 2029).
VDOT and county staff also reviewed larger corridors and state projects: I‑95 Exit 126 / Route 1 improvements and the design‑build bundle for Southpoint Parkway (construction 2025), Route 17 widening portions near I‑95 (completed), Route 3 operational and intersection improvements, Route 620 Harrison Road reconstruction (right‑of‑way complete; construction expected to finish summer 2026), and a series of studies (Route 217, Route 208/639 and Safe Streets for All) to position future SmartScale and federal grant applications.
Staff noted several funding activities: SmartScale Round 6 results are expected in January/February; a federal railroad crossing elimination grant application is pending with March 2025 notification; and resurfacing contracts for 2025 are being prepared. Supervisors praised recent quick work on a box culvert replacement and urged continued emphasis on ditching, grading and secondary‑road maintenance as additional state funds become available.
The presentation concluded with winter‑weather readiness notes and a schedule for continuing preliminary engineering, right‑of‑way and construction milestones; staff offered to follow up on specific requests, such as pedestrian signal options and detailed lumen checks for crossing flashers.
