Residents urge Stafford supervisors to reject Buc‑ee’s travel center at proposed site

During the presentations portion of the Sept. 3 meeting, several Stafford County residents urged supervisors to oppose locating a large Buc‑ee’s/Bucky’s travel center at a site near Embry Mill and other established neighborhoods.
Nancy Reeder of Boulder Drive opened public comment by urging the board not to permit the project and to “invest this valuable piece of land in something for Stafford residents.” Peter Stenkavage and Charlie Blackledge voiced similar concerns about traffic, long‑term vacancy and impacts on schools and emergency response times.
Cindy Simpson, speaking for residents in Austin Bridge, Westgate and Embry Mill, said the travel center conflicts with the neighborhoods’ long‑established planning and would cause safety, noise and environmental problems. Simpson cited traffic estimates presented to residents: “Increased traffic expected to be in excess of 20,000 vehicles a day on a typical day, [and] over 2,100 vehicles per hour on busy days,” and said those volumes would threaten pedestrians and grandchildren who walk from nearby daycare and parks.
Speakers said they are not categorically opposed to Buc‑ee’s as a business but object to the proposed location and urged board members to prioritize neighborhood character and safety when considering any rezoning or building permits.
Board members listened and said the item will be considered through the county’s planning and public process; several supervisors suggested continued public engagement before any formal actions.
