VDOT updates board on late‑summer maintenance; supervisors raise herbicide and safety concerns

David Clark of the Virginia Department of Transportation briefed the Montgomery County Board on routine late‑summer road maintenance — mowing, brush cutting, pipe replacements and gravel road grading — and said crews have started the secondary construction segment of the county's six‑year plan on Taylor Hollow (Luster's Gate Road to the first bridge).
Supervisors raised several operational questions. Supervisor Graskey asked whether Lick Run Road is scheduled for more substantial work; Clark said he would check scheduling and follow up. Supervisor Gamatz relayed citizen concerns about herbicide spraying along Route 460 and requested that VDOT provide information about the herbicides used; Clark agreed to provide the mix and explained herbicide use is one tool to control brush when cutting and staff resources are constrained. Concerns were also raised about guardrail placement on Taylor Hollow, shoulder widening where right‑of‑way allows, and speeding near Bishop Road during school bus pickup times.
VDOT committed to review the locations and return with details about schedules, herbicide mixes and potential safety measures such as signage or speed devices.
