Organizers for a reconstituted Abingdon senior group briefed the Washington County Board of Supervisors on plans to incorporate a nonprofit called Abingdon Washington County Senior Services Incorporated to serve residents age 60 and older.
Richard Denzau read a proposed mission statement describing charitable services to address health, welfare and safety issues for local seniors, and listed planned activities including weekly meetings with speakers, congregate meals provided through District 3, monthly socials and two major annual excursions. Denzau said the group hopes to make the Abingdon Train Station its permanent home once the town completes grant-funded accessibility and parking improvements.
Mildred Jones, a longtime member, said the group has focused on mutual support: volunteers prepare take-home trays for isolated members, coordinate rides, and organize social events. "This is the type of things that are happening now is our members are watching out for one another," she said.
Board members asked whether District 3 had been consulted; presenters said District 3 approved the plan, has provided a site manager to oversee meal-service regulations and assisted in finding interim meeting space (the McCabe Lodge of the Odd Fellows). The board thanked the presenters and complimented the group's "seniors helping seniors" motto.
No formal county funding or action was taken at the meeting; organizers outlined next steps for incorporation and a future permanent location.
