Planning commission backs special-exception permit for Mendota weight-loss clinic

The Washington County Planning Commission on Monday recommended approval of a special-exception permit that would allow About Face Aesthetics and Skincare LLC to operate a medical weight-loss clinic at 2534 Mendota Road in Mendota.

Mr. Richardson, speaking for staff, said the parcel — about 9.33 acres in the Conservation and Recreation (CR) zoning district — was originally built for medical use and already provides parking that exceeds the minimum required by zoning. Eva Boley, representing the Mendota Community Association and the applicant, told the commission the MCA unanimously supports the proposal and that the clinic expects to operate Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with two to three employees on site.

"I think people will come out to Mendota to see me," Boley said, describing plans to divert some patients from a busy Bristol office to the new Mendota site.

Logan McDavid, who said he represented the church across the road, said the congregation was "not for or against" the proposal but sought assurance that the facility would not be a methadone clinic. The applicant answered those questions during the public hearing and said no exterior construction beyond general cleanup, pruning and landscaping was planned.

After closing the public hearing, a commissioner moved to recommend approval and another commissioner seconded. The commission voted unanimously to recommend approval. The staff representative told the applicant the item will be considered by the Washington County Board of Supervisors at its Aug. 13 meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

The commission’s recommendation does not itself authorize the clinic to open; final approval rests with the Board of Supervisors and any required permitting or inspections.
