Opioid Abatement Authority briefs County; board approves $75,000 regional contribution

Tony McDowell, executive director of the Opioid Abatement Authority, briefed the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 10 about how opioid-settlement funds are distributed in Virginia and on regional programs in which Tazewell participates. McDowell said roughly $1 billion in settlement funds is expected for Virginia overall and described the OAA's distribution rules: about 15% to state-level appropriations, 30% directly to localities, plus additional regional pots that counties can join to apply competitively.
McDowell told the board that the OAA currently holds about $475,000 in an account earmarked for Tazewell in addition to direct settlement payments the county will receive. He described two regional projects involving Tazewell: Project Pathfinder (drug-recovery-court support across several Southwest Virginia counties) and C-CORE (a 90-day community residential program for reentry from DOC). McDowell noted that the OAA has awarded funds to support such regional efforts.
Following that briefing, the county's opioid abatement committee recommended contributing $75,000 from the county's regional account to the C-CORE regional rehabilitation project; the board approved the contribution by voice vote.
