Tazewell County supervisors voted to approve a five-year lease, installation work and a battery-backup purchase intended to modernize the county’s network and improve cybersecurity.
County IT lead Mr. King told the board the negotiated lease will require a first-year payment of $135,584.45 and that installation costs came in higher than the originally budgeted $100,000 — at about $118,500. He said the batteries for the data center, priced at $50,932.38, would be paid from ARPA funds and that other lease and installation costs can be covered from the department’s existing contractual-service and lease budget lines.
The board approved a bundled motion to move forward with the lease, the installation and the battery purchase, subject to legal review of the agreements. Chairman and other members discussed timing and a planned nine-week installation schedule once work can begin; staff said the county must complete a Windows upgrade first and that prices could increase after a stated deadline, prompting the request for prompt execution.
County staff framed the upgrades as part of a multi-year effort to replace legacy systems and strengthen security after recent phishing and malware attempts. The board’s approval authorizes staff to complete legal review and sign contracts so work can proceed.
The board recorded the action by voice vote; staff said they will return background materials and final contract language to the county attorney for review before signature.
