The Tazewell County treasurer told the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 10 that the county's total committed funds are spread across multiple accounts (capital projects, ARPA, opioid settlement funds and others) and that the uncommitted carryover balance entering FY24-25 is approximately $10,247,000. The treasurer walked new board members through delinquent-collections data covering tax years 2019'024 and explained that Virginia law makes personal property taxes uncollectible after five years whereas real-estate taxes remain collectible for up to 20 years.
The presentation included detailed collection-rate figures for recent years (the treasurer reported a first-half real-estate uncollected rate of roughly 10.9 percent and comparable figures for 2022 and 2023). Board members asked for clarifications about the tax-overpayment fund, payment posting practices, and how payments are applied to oldest outstanding years. The treasurer said collection rates have improved when the county can proceed to tax sale measures after multi-year delinquencies.
Board members thanked staff for the report and requested follow-up materials, including delinquent-collections history over five years and clarification of specific fund balances.
