Middle school students showcase RMS Space Challenge rockets, experiments and grant-funded projects

Ray Tonchian Jr. and three Romulus students — identified in the presentation as Logan, Sam and Daniel — described the RMS Space Challenge during the Oct. 28 board meeting, showing rocket components, photos and data-collection work.
Tonchian said the program integrates math, science, astrobiology and agricultural science and provides students with hands-on projects such as rocketry, microgravity experiments and data logging. He noted the program had received support from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and other community partners and that the club presents at events like the Romulus EcoFair.
Students described learning trigonometry and radio telemetry for launches and said the hands-on approach made lessons more engaging than textbook work. Trustees and the superintendent praised the students for their work and the program’s potential to expand in the district.
The board thanked Tonchian and the students for the demonstration and encouraged continued outreach to showcase student projects to the community.
