Hanover schools report strong start and introduce interim superintendent

Bob May, chairman of the Hanover County School Board, introduced Dr. Lisa Pinnicuff as interim superintendent and said the school division is "blessed with a tremendous team that makes the magic happen for our students each and every day." Dr. Pinnicuff told supervisors approximately 16,900 students attended in-person at the start of the year and outlined staffing and program statistics, including 194 new teachers and only four remaining teacher vacancies.
Dr. Pinnicuff highlighted achievement measures and programs: the division outperformed state averages in reading, math, science and history, reduced chronic absenteeism from 8.6% (2022–23) to 7.5% (2023–24), is implementing the Virginia Literacy Act, and is deploying Securely Classroom software to help teachers monitor students’ on-device activity during school hours. She also described a second-grade swim partnership with SwimRVA at five elementary schools that provides seven days of instruction and transportation paid by the division.
May and other board members praised the new Ashland Elementary School, which opened Aug. 19 and hosted a ribbon-cutting and tours. During Q&A, supervisors discussed playground access and neighborhood concerns and invited the superintendent to coordinate visits with town officials.
The presentation closed with a promise of a fuller achievement presentation to the school board in October once detailed scores are released.
