District fire marshal details Oct. 19 fatal house fire near Cascades subdivision

Crews attempted rear access to reach a bedroom where bystanders reported a possible occupant, but a locked rear door and hoarded conditions blocked entry and forced the incident to defensive operations.
Nierings told the board that firefighters later located a deceased elderly male inside the bedroom. The house contained a large amount of household debris and a couch was found in the origin room; Nierings described the residence as a hoarder home and said clutter increased the danger for firefighters and complicated the investigation.
"We did locate a possible ignition source, but at this point, it's still pending notification and under investigation," Nierings said, adding that the state fire marshal, the sheriff's office and the medical examiner participated in the on‑scene investigation and that the medical examiner is performing an autopsy.
The marshal said the home had been occupied for about 30 years and the nearest relative was out of state. Neighbors reported that the occupant often took a vehicle to get food and typically napped in the afternoon; the fire occurred around 2:06 p.m. Nierings said crews were placed in defensive mode when interior access proved unsafe due to heavy smoke, fire spread and structural collapse hazards.
Board members expressed condolences and praised the crew response. Nierings reiterated that the cause remains under investigation and that the district will await the medical examiner and state fire marshal findings before releasing a final determination.
Next steps: the district will continue coordinating with the state fire marshal and the sheriff's office; the medical examiner's autopsy results are pending.
