County approves $28,000 one‑time grant to fund plowing permit for Strawberry Marina Road

Wasatch County Council on Dec. 18 authorized a one-time $28,000 appropriation to support temporary plowing of Strawberry Marina Road and to serve as the bond required by the county's permit terms.
Staff described the stretch as a county road that connects Highway 40 to the Strawberry Marina and said it is heavily used in winter; the one-time funding would be taken from transient room or restaurant-tax funds and held as a bond against potential damage. The concessionaire would be responsible for liability terms in the permit, and the $28,000 would be returned at the end of the season if no damage occurred.
Paul Phillips of Bay Recreation addressed the council in support and said his organization has been responsible for the road since 1988 and appreciates the county reviewing options to keep the road plowed and accessible. Council members characterized the contribution as a short-term, limited solution for the coming winter while staff pursues longer-term funding and coordination with the Forest Service and state partners.
A motion to approve the contribution and authorize staff to finalize permit language passed unanimously.
