Board schedules public hearing on school‑zone speed cameras after Public Safety Committee endorsement

The Frederick County Public Safety Committee and the Board of Supervisors agreed Nov. 13 to hold a public hearing on a proposal to install a school‑zone photo speed‑enforcement system supplied by Blue Line Solutions.

A committee member who had attended the Virginia Association of Counties meeting described positive reports from other jurisdictions and said the tool is intended to reduce excessive speeds near schools. The board voted unanimously to forward the item to public hearing so the public can comment before the board considers any implementation.

Chair noted state law constrains where automated enforcement may be used, and staff said the sheriff will be invited to present at the public hearing to address safety rationales and deployment plans. The chair also described that fines associated with the program would follow the established structure (for example, a $100 civil penalty was cited as an example in the meeting), noting that fines do not necessarily carry points against a driver’s license under the approach discussed.

The board asked staff to schedule the public hearing in the near future and to ensure the sheriff and vendor provide a public presentation on safety goals and deployment details.
