Resident urges King George supervisors to drop appeal of variance for 16012 Machotic Drive
Summary
Savannah Wimbush told the board the county's appeal of a variance for her family's lot at 16012 Machotic Drive undermines the BZA's unanimous decision, arguing the parcel predates the Chesapeake Bay Preservation overlay and has an unusually small buildable area.

Savannah Carabid Wimbush stood at the podium during public comment to urge the King George County Board of Supervisors to withdraw the county's appeal of a variance that the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) had granted for her family's property at 16012 Machotic Drive in the Dahlgren District.
Wimbush said the parcel predates the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act overlay and that the zoning overlay on the lot leaves only roughly 6% of the property buildable. She described the lot's shape and existing primary residence encroachment into the RPA as "extraordinary circumstances" and said the BZA had reviewed the variance criteria over three meetings and voted unanimously in favor.
"There is no hardship to be proven, RPA intrusion or otherwise," Wimbush told the board, and she said the county's decision to appeal amounted to an unnecessary overreach. She urged supervisors to "withdraw your direction to challenge the variance, respect the unanimous decision of the VZA, and allow us to move forward."
Chair and staff confirmed the variance, appeal and procedural history will be part of legal and administrative follow-up. No board action to rescind the appeal was taken during the meeting; the board later convened a closed session on Walnut Hill and added a settlement-agreement item for Jan. 7, 2025.
