Board highlights retirees and local programs; library, economic development and parks report progress

At its Dec. 17 meeting, the Henry County Board of Supervisors heard a House of Delegates commendation for retired supervisor Tommy Slaughter, approved a resolution honoring Rita Shropshire, and received updates from the county economic development corporation, the Blue Ridge Regional Library and Parks & Recreation youth sports programs.
The Henry County Board of Supervisors used part of its Dec. 17 meeting for ceremonial honors and community updates.
Delegate Eric Phillips read a House of Delegates resolution commending Tommy Slaughter for 16 years on the Henry County Board of Supervisors, citing contributions to public safety, economic development, school construction and workforce housing. The resolution text included the line, "Tommy Slaughter hereby be commended on the occasion of his retirement from the Henry County Board of Supervisors," which Phillips read aloud to the board.
Supervisor Pruitt presented a separate resolution honoring Rita Shropshire for decades of civic and volunteer service in Henry County, including church leadership and work with the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department and the Eastern Star. The board approved that resolution by motion and voice vote.
Mark Heath, representing the county's economic development efforts, reported a Nov.–Dec. activity summary that included a workshop on bidding for state contracts (12 participants), the annual 'Dine Small' promotion with 21 restaurants participating, submission of two VDRSP pre-applications for site-development grants (including the Bryant property), and tourism and workforce development outreach. Heath said the VDRSP fund contains "at least $50 to $60,000,000" for site development and that staff had been approved to advance to full applications.
A Blue Ridge Regional Library representative summarized this year's summer-reading efforts and outreach: "the 3 branches in Henry County provided a total of 71 programs with 1,728 participants," distributed 887 snacks and expanded a 'food for fines' drive that donates nonperishables to local food providers. The library also noted potential budget requests tied to a Jan. 2025 minimum-wage change.
Parks & Recreation staff recognized fall youth sports champions across multiple age groups and said nearly 500 children participated across five sports this season.
Each of the presentations was procedural or celebratory; no formal board actions were required for the presentations themselves.
