County identifies possible site for public-safety radio upgrade and potential telecom tower

County planning staff told commissioners that the county administrator, Fire & EMS and state police are working with regional partners on an upgrade to the public-safety radio system. As part of that project, staff said, the county may need to install a telecommunications tower to improve radio coverage.
Unidentified Speaker 2 presented a GIS map and identified a generally flat parcel behind the sheriff’s office and near the water-treatment plant as probably the best available site, noting that some tree removal might be necessary to improve communications.
A commissioner asked whether EMS or fire historically used an antenna on a tower; staff acknowledged that EMS had used antenna facilities in the past but provided no further technical details or schedule for the radio upgrade. No conditional-use permit or final site decision was made at the meeting; staff said any tower proposal would follow the normal permitting and review process if pursued.
