Cumberland County reports tanker donation, new grants and Madeline's House opening

County staff told the board a neighboring county’s board had voted to donate a 2001 International tanker to Cumberland County as that county replaces older apparatus under its capital improvements program. Staff reported that a comparable new 2024 model would cost roughly $498,000, and described the donation as a cooperative partnership with a mutual-aid partner.
The county also reported it had been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Virginia Tobacco Commission to support an agricultural economic-development strategic planning effort and had submitted an additional application (described in the meeting as an “A to 3” application) that, if successful, would bring total project funding to about $45,000 at no direct cost to taxpayers.
Administrators announced Madeline’s House—described as an operational local service—opened and became operational on Sept. 30. Board staff thanked the nonprofit and noted the board’s financial support for the service.
Board members acknowledged the announcements; no formal votes or contract approvals for the tanker transfer, the grant awards or program funding were recorded during the meeting.
