Schools, library, planning updates and a one‑year lease for Social Services highlighted at Cumberland supervisors meeting

Members of the board heard brief agency updates across education, library and planning. The schools reported summer learning activities, FFA recognition, and dates for staff convocation and the first day of school. Rick Ewing of the County Public Library said construction has begun to add two study rooms (funded by library set‑asides and the library foundation, not county funds) and that the library is expanding programming to engage middle and high school students.
Planning Director Stephanie Johnson reported permit activity for June (commercial and residential permits, farm structure permits), the effect of a recent zoning-fee code amendment that generated about $885 in additional revenue, and that the Cops Creek Reservoir impoundment has paused due to low water levels with no clear restart date. The board also reviewed a proposed one‑year lease (Aug. 1, 2024–July 31, 2025) of the Luther P. Jackson Community Center to the Department of Social Services for $24,000 annually ($2,000 monthly); staff recommended authorizing the county administrator to execute the lease.
