Kane County commissioners on Dec. 17 opened a public hearing and approved appointments to the county Planning Commission following a public comment contesting the selection process.
James Permont had told the commission earlier that he applied for a seat but received no interview or further outreach. "We chose not to interview those applicants that we already knew well," he quoted an emailed explanation, and said the approach signaled a lack of due process that discouraged volunteers.
During the public hearing commissioners explained that three commissioners weighed in on the candidates and emphasized geographic representation. The commission reappointed Mason Haycock and appointed Lara Clayson to a two‑year term and Julie Miller to a four‑year term, citing planning and zoning experience and representation for the Zion area. Commissioners acknowledged earlier communication lapses and apologized for any applicant confusion.
All motions to adopt resolutions R2024‑41 (appointments) and R2024‑42 (reappointment) passed unanimously.
Commissioners said they would do better at communicating application status in future recruitments and noted that some applicants missed filing deadlines but remain eligible for future openings.
