Kane County votes to buy North Fork gravel pit to shorten hauling distances

KANAB — Kane County approved the purchase of a 10-acre gravel source on North Fork Road to reduce hauling distances and improve county road maintenance capability.
Road supervisor Bert Harris told the commission the parcel lies roughly halfway up North Fork Road and is the closest dependable source for gravel in that part of the county. “We’ve negotiated a price and come to an agreement of $60,000 for the property,” Harris said. He described plans to install retention features that would capture flood-borne material and make the pit a more reliable, replenishing resource.
Commissioners discussed funding the acquisition through a budget opening; Harris said some unexpected funds (for instance, reimbursements from Deer Springs fire work) could cover much of the purchase with the county providing the remainder. The motion, amended to authorize Commissioner Wade Heaton to sign transactional documents, passed unanimously.
Proponents said owning a local source will lower per-ton costs by shortening haul distances and reduce time needed to supply urgent road repairs. The county directed staff to complete purchase paperwork and return any required closing documentation.
