Emery County travel staff told the committee they secured a $67,500 marketing grant intended to boost local events, including the Mecca Bike Festival and Swell Jamboree.
"The travel office went after a UAT grama as a marketing grant for specifically for events, and we're awarded 67,500," said an office representative (Unidentified Speaker S4). The committee said the funds are earmarked for event marketing to expand support for existing and new events across the county.
At the same meeting, an organizer identified as Jasmine presented plans for a fall event centered on desert and mountain rides, describing a short-term goal for the event to break even and a long-term goal of returning profits to trail maintenance. Jasmine described community-focused features including Thursday check-ins, food trucks, Friday rides, multiple Saturday rides, a night ride/parade with local law enforcement coordination, and a trash-collection drawing to discourage littering.
"We want our community to benefit as much as possible from this," Jasmine said, asking for help mapping routes and ensuring the event does not damage trails. Committee members advised that the organizer assemble a local planning committee and offered logistical help, pointing to existing permits and contacts who have run similar events.
Travel staff and committee members cautioned that the organizer will need permits and insurance before running an event on public lands. An agency representative noted organizers often must secure multiple permits and liability insurance; the committee offered to help route Jasmine to permit-holders and to share local contacts and operational knowledge.
The travel office also asked committee members to review the newly launched county tourism website (visitemorycounty.com) and provide feedback on event promotion and logistics. Next steps discussed include Jasmine convening a planning group, follow-up help from travel office staff on permitting logistics, and continuing coordination with the Forest Service and BLM on routing and timing.
No formal approvals or funding commitments beyond the announced marketing grant were made during the meeting.
