"Tentative plans by the state courts show a new court building, operable as early as August of 20 28," Speaker 2 said, and recommended the county work in conjunction with state courts to develop a long‑term plan that addresses property boundaries and operations. Staff placed a $150,000 study placeholder in the 2025 budget and asked that the study at minimum focus on best use of existing land, potential site changes and projections of future construction costs.
Commissioners debated whether to acquire adjacent state‑owned property, how much parking is used daily by the courthouse and how renovation and acquisition costs might stack up — one staff estimate referenced acquisition pricing roughly between $5.1M and $6.5M with an additional renovation estimate that could bring total costs into the $8–9M range depending on scope. Commissioners agreed that the county needs better coordination and early communication with state courts to avoid a future "disconnect." Staff will scope the study and return with recommended mission, vision and scope for commissioner approval.
