County seeks $ for justice complex tech upgrades; IS warns storage, bandwidth also need budgeted

Troy told the Davis County Budget Committee that he has submitted a request for upgraded hardware at the justice complex to reduce staff downtime when processing video evidence.
"I submitted a request for, I think, 36, new higher tech, better computers with the ability to process video faster," Troy said, adding that he did not know exact wiring needs and would rely on information systems to assess the precise solution.
Jeff from information systems said the issue is broader than end-user machines. "A lot of it is bandwidth and video," he said, and warned the county's storage usage "is going up 50% a year," meaning long-term storage costs could outpace the expense of new desktop machines. Jeff said he has scheduled a special work session for Sept. 24 to bring commissioners, the sheriff and relevant staff together to discuss strategy and budgeting for computing, networking and storage capacity.
Troy characterized his initial submission as a placeholder while technical assessments proceed: "I don't know exactly what the wiring needs are gonna be, so I'm gonna rely... we'll get a good time on that." Both he and Jeff emphasized the need to avoid repeated downtime during evidence processing and to create an efficient, supportable workflow.
The committee did not take a funding vote on Sept. 9; members signaled interest in discussing the options at the work session and in receiving cost estimates once IS completes its assessment.
