During the Nov. 19 meeting, Darren Brown of the Tri County Health Department urged the county to connect residents with available low-interest financing and technical assistance for failed wastewater systems and domestic wells.
"I just haven't been up here for a while, and I'm just trying to figure out to start making some more visits up here…We have 1% loans for our people to fix those," Brown said, identifying the Healthy Communities of Northeastern Utah nonprofit as a program administrator and noting the program’s income-threshold eligibility. He added that the DEQ has additional funds for well systems and that county staff can help residents start applications.
Commissioners also discussed workforce housing; staff said the self-help housing program is expected to start in spring 2025 and that state-level contacts have expressed interest in supporting local efforts. Geotechnical test holes at a clinic build site found a wet spot and a hard pan; commissioners and staff discussed inspection arrangements and whether the contracted inspector (Matt Tate, based in Vernal) will handle upcoming reviews.
Next steps: staff will inform residents about the low-interest loan option, assist with application contacts, continue coordination on the Cheneyville sewer project and proceed with geotechnical and inspection planning for the clinic site.
